The second competition for local Table Football was held last weekend with seventeen players sorted in different groups and in different categories. Apart from the Open category, the Under 19, Under 15 and the Veterans category were organised in view of the final competition to be held in mid May’09.

In the Open category, after loosing the first edition in the final, Hansel Mallia took the utmost after beating Derek Conti 2-1 in the final. Samuel Bartolo and Mark Gauci reached the semis. Both Mallia and Conti played in the same group in which Mallia also won this encounter and made the double in the final. After taking the lead, late in the first half, Conti managed to equalise within minutes. In the second half, after relentless attacks by Conti, Mallia kept calm and confident and managed to find the winner with just few minutes from the end to obtain victory and end the 2008 on top of the Maltese rankings.

The Under 15 competition set on one group of five players, had Angelo Borg crowned winner with three wins and just one draw match to finish one point ahead of Matthew Pace. With this victory, Borg took the lead in the standings ahead of Darren Bezzina, while Darren Carabott still in third place.

The Under 19 was organised with the same youth players where Angelo Borg won again this competition and in the final match he had the better off Matthew Pace 3-2 with the winner scored in the extra time after a drew 2-2 match.

In the Veterans category, Adrian Bonnici won this day competition. In the decisive match Bonnici bet Joe Mifsud 3-1 to obtain victory and accumulate same points as Mifsud. With this victory, and both players tied with the same points, the final competition set for March, will decide the Maltese Veteran Champion.

The Malta Knock Out competition

At the beginning of June the MTFSA organised the Malta Knock Out competition for which 16 players took part. The K.Out competition is the second major competition being organized as its’ winner will represent Malta in the FISTF World Cup competition to be held in France this summer.

The competition is organized on a knock out basis where only the winners march on in this challenge. This meant that some big names suffered an early elimination. One of which was Malta’s top player Massimo Cremona who lost to Joseph Mifsud 2-1 in the extra time. After this game, Mifsud faced Hansel Mallia who had just won over Charles Aquilina. However, Mallia, who won this competition last year, lost 2-1 in extra time against Mifsud who then faced Samuel Bartolo in the semi final.

Another surprising result was the early elimination of Stefan Pace, after he lost to Josef Camilleri on shoot outs.

In the semi final stage, Samuel Bartolo won against Joe Mifsud on shoot outs after a the match ended on a tight 2-2, while in the other semi final, Mark Gauci bet Josef Camilleri 3-2. Gauci won over Roma’s Derek Conti 4-1.

In the final, Bartolo performed to his maximum and won over Gauci 2-0. Bartolo won this competition for the first time to confirm the positive period he is playing to. Thus, Bartolo will be the third Maltese player after Massimo Cremona and Joe Mifsud to be nominated to represent Malta in this summer’s World Cup.

After a small break due to the festivities carried during December, the MTFSA kicked off the New Year 2007 with the second circuit event held only for the locals held last Sunday 7th January. The competition was organised over six groups. Five groups of three players each and one group of four players for a total of nineteen players involved.

Due to the recent festivities almost all Table Football events had a small break. This was clearly visible in some players who are still out of their form and some disappointments also took place. The major surprise of the day was Joe Zammit Pavia who managed an unusual group qualification to the next round. However he was immediately sent on the bench after he lost to Mario Camilleri at Barrage stage.

Massimo Cremona, on his way, freshly crowned with the Gold memento by the Malta Olympic Committee did not miss the expectancy and managed to reach the final after some great performances. Mark Gauci had the best of the day. After a bad start by loosing to Kenneth Attard at group stage, he won the following game and obtained the second place in the group. During the barrage he played against Charles Aquilina, 2006 Knock Out finalist, after which he then managed to reach the final.

In the final Gauci met Cremona, World’s number 1. This was a very tight match. Gauci took the lead twice, but Cremona managed to equalise twice. However in the last minutes of the game, Gauci managed to score his third and decisive goal which meant maximum points for this second MTFSA event.

The U/19 Category was won by Mauro Camilleri beating 4-2 Andrew Abela in the final.

The veteran category was won by Patrick Pace over Joe Zammit Pavia 4-1.

Report on Circuit 1

During the weekend the MTFSA kicked off its season 2006/2007 with the first circuit tournament. The event took place at Zabbar Subbuteo Club’s premises. For this event, only eleven players took part. Although being a tight number of participants, there was a very high level in each game. Only to mention is that eight from the eleven players are registered with foreign clubs being one of the respective teams’ foreigners due to their ability in this sport. This event was scheduled on a three group preliminary, the first of three and the other two groups made up of 4 players each. Massimo Cremona, Samwel Bartolo and Charles Aquilina being seeded due to their last season’s placing, all the others where chosen with a normal poll. To mention at this stage is the defeat conceived by No 1 player Massimo Cremona against Joe Borg Bonaci.

Soon after the group stages, six players qualified, where four had to play barrage. Soon after this stage, immediate semi finals took place where Cremona bet Valletta’s Derek Conti 2-0, while Bonaci had to go for the golden goal to beat Valletta’s wonder boy Samwel Bartolo in a very tight match which ended 2-1 for the ex Juniors World Champion, Bonaci. This led to a repletion match between Cremona and Bonaci. During this final, Bonaci took the lead early in the second half and had to close the match soon after. However Cremona managed to equalise just before the end to strive the match to extra time. These extra ten minutes took nowhere and the match had to be decided at shoot-outs. Cremona led the breakthrough and just one shot was enough for him to win this first local competition and take the ull points from this event.
